Our Courses

Starting in October 2021, Croft Pottery will offer a range of wheel throwing and hand building courses aimed at different levels and age groups.

We will run weekly evening and day time courses, one day courses as well as weekend and residential courses.

We will also run advance courses in making, Glazing and firing.

Mel produces incredibly detailed pieces often made in Porcelain. Known for her sea animals and seas scapes Mel has been making and selling her work for a while now. Soon to start a masters in ceramics Mel has agreed to start teaching some seasonal sessions @croftpottery the first of which will be her Christmas wreath and decorations class in November: be sure to keep an eye out for her course release as it’s sure to be popular

Last night was repair night at Clay Club. @josephludkin talked through Kintsugi with our lovely Thursday night group. Kintsugi is the art of repairing broken pottery with resin and gold dust, repairing the pot and celebrating imperfection.
There were some fantastic result.

Absolutely gorgeous pair of organic, sculptural vases made in stoneware clay with a mixture of stoneware, porcelain and wild clay slip applied to the surface to create texture. Ray then used oxides and fluid ash glazes to accentuate the surfaces and add beautiful organic hues

Can’t reveal the piece yet as she hasn’t seen it herself but I thought I would offer up just a glimpse of glaze detail as its just so beautiful.
A mixture of light and dark ash glazes in different thicknesses over oxides and slips. I can honestly say this blew me away, it looks like it has revolved in nature

A rare, empty shot of one end of our teaching studio from the archives.
Since this photo was taken we have expanded. We now have 9 wheels in the studio and a further two available in our professional practice studio (including a kick wheel)
We have also added a large slab roller and kitted out the studio with a lot more hand building equipment. The other end of the studio (not seen in the photo now has a glazing area with big ‘studio’ sinks and a ‘Clay station’ for clay prep and storage and a Tool station for all our studio throwing and handbuilding tools. We have almost doubled our student storage shelving to accommodate all of our Clay Club members (60+ and counting). We also have a dedicated kiln room and Clay processing room adjoining the teaching studio and a new building housing our large gas kiln and Raku equipment just behind the teaching studio.

With over 80 people set to attend weekly come September we are the largest community of potters in North Yorkshire. You can’t instantly build a community like this, it has to grow organically over time allowing friendships and bonds to build, spaces to evolve and knowledge to grow. I am so proud that Croft Pottery has developed into such a creative and hive. The warmth, enthusiasm and supportive atmosphere created by our students and staff is so wonderful to see and testimony to the power of a community brought together by the love of Clay.

Had the absolute pleasure of having one of my oldest and dearest friends @grumblemouse visit last week over from Ireland with his wonderful family. Both Charles and his wife Anna have potted in the past, Charles actually started around the same time as me and was my regular pottery show buddy until we both left London for the countryside.
I have one of Charles’ first pots and it is still the favourite in my collection. Charles joined our wednesday night clay clubbers for a session and was straight back on the horse making some exquisite tiles.

Here’s to old friends and pottery buddies, I ll come visit soon
